शुरुआत में पुलिस ने परिवार के एक परिचित को ही हिरासत में लिया लेकिन बाद में छोड़ दिया। इसके बाद पुलिस ने परिवार के एक संदिग्ध रिश्तेदार को गिरफ्तार किया। पुलिस ने उसके खून से सने कपड़े और साइकल बरामद कर ली। डीआईजी ने बताया, यह घटना तब हुई जब इलाके में पुलिसकर्मी गश्त पर थे लेकिन चार महीने की बच्ची घर के दूसरे पुरुषों और महिलाओं के साथ सो रही थी और अपराधी भी उन्हीं में से एक था।

डीआईजी ने यह भी बताया कि पीडि़ता के परिवार ने संदिग्ध आरोपी का नाम नहीं लिया जो बच्ची का चाचा है लेकिन शुरुआती संदेह के आधार पर एसआईटी ने बच्ची के चाचा को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है। आरोप है कि बच्ची की मां के साथ उसकी बहस हुई थी, जिसके बाद उसने घटना को अंजाम दिया।
